“The first of the line is tied to a tree and the last is being eaten by the ants…” ~Gabriel Garcia Marquez - One Hundred Years of Solitude

For my own part I’m almost afraid to talk about this song. I don’t think explaining the literal story behind it would do anything but make it feel less significant. I don’t think talking about how much of it I completely rewrote at the outset of the recording process would be very enlightening (except for a half-baked idea I almost have about meta-symbolism that I’m definitely not smart enough to articulate.)

I could just load this page with other people’s words about the cyclical nature of life and death, or give a treatise about the tattoos I have and what they mean, or share a bunch of pictures of unfathomably large nebulas billowing out into space, reflecting the shape and fractilizing patterns of fungal networks spreading deep underground among diverse root systems. I could direct everyone to watch the documentary: “Fantastic Fungi” or to read the masterwork of magical realism I quoted above. I could talk about prophecy, I could talk about entropy, I could talk about consciousness and communication, I could talk about a huddle of depressed friends with time to burn, mushrooms to eat, and no idea how close they were to the universe. I could talk about how the endless cycle of breaking and mending is what gives life texture, or how the stories we tell ourselves about that cycle is what gives life meaning.

I could go on forever about it and never reach anything as sublime as the sound of a chorus of voices in a grand expansive harmony, chanting in the dark together, searching for some cosmic punchline to our Earthly joke.

It’s a song about realizing that the thick armor of solitude you’ve built around yourself is actually made of the very same stuff that connects you to everything and everyone. I think I can mostly leave it at that.

Huge thank you once again to Tyler Prendergast for the beautiful cover art for the single release (Also to Sawyer Greenberg for contributing some new source art for this one)!
